Preservatives: Let’s talk about hurdle technology and “self-preservation”

Thanks for joining me for this aside on the idea of a product that contains water, like a lotion, can be “self-preserving”. There’s a post on Lush’s site – A beginners’ guide to self-preserving – that we’ll get to shortly, but first, we need to take a look at the idea of hurdle technology, “a term used…...

Practice your process: Choosing the right preservative for the job!

We need to talk about a preservatives for a bit for both the Tarte Frxxxtion stick duplication and in general. When we’re formulating, we need to evaluate every product to see which preservative will work best with it. In most of the formulas I make, I use Germall Plus liquid because it works with the…...

Preservative: Jeecide CAP-5

As I mentioned, I have some new preservatives to share with you. Here’s the other one!  From TKB Trading: “Cap 2 and Cap 5 are both broad spectrum preservatives. Cap 5 is more effective against yeast and mold since it contains sodium sorbate but its optimized pH range is 3-7. Cap 5 is soluble in…...

Preservative: Jeecide CAP-2

I bought two preservatives from TKB Trading – Preservative Cap-2 and Preservative Cap-5 – as I really wanted to make a lip balm that contains water, and that means I need a preservative. My favourite one, liquid Germall Plus, isn’t suitable for oral or lip care products, so I had to find something new. Let’s take a…...

There was such interest in this post on inactivation of parabens by various ingredients, I wanted to share more with you about preservatives. Q&A: Are there any non-non-ionic emulsifiers? How to use parabens in non-ionic products?

In the December Q&A, Mia Makes Things noticed, Something I just noticed… So non-ionic solubillizers and emulsifiers can deactivate paraben-based preservatives… but I have yet to come across a solubilizer or emulsifier (O/W or W/O) that is *not* non-ionic. So how do people manage to use paraben-based preservatives, like Germaben II or Phenonip, in any product?…...

Q&A quickies: What’s a good alternative to phenoxyethanol in oil based products?

In the November Q&A, Liza asked: I am very allergic to anything to Phenoxyethanol and was wondering if you could tell me, what would make a good alternative preservative for oil based products, like a body scrub? Let’s take a look at phenoxyethanol and what it does. Phenoxyethanol is a phenolic compound with an alcohol functional group…...

Q&A: Adding a preservative to diluted melt & pour base?

In the July Q&A, Melanie asked:  I know you don’t do a lot in the area of basic soap, but my question is really about preservatives. I have tried making a batch of my own melt and pour base. I like to be able to whip up a bar of soap to match lotions etc…....

Subscribers’ exclusive: Why do commercial products use several different preservatives?

In the July Q&A, After doing ingredient studies on some of my favorite high end organic products (Tata Harper, Eminence, Tracie Martin), I’m finding that, more often than not, several different emulsifiers, thickeners and preservatives are used in the same formulation. This mystifies me! Why don’t they pick one? I understand using several different humectants, emollients,…...
