It’s not a good idea to mix emulsified products like lotions or conditioners by hand. A lot of emulsifiers require high shear mixing or mixing with something like a stick or immersion blender. Mixing by hand won’t get the same results, and you may see a decrease or increase in viscosity or a lotion fail.
This came up when I visited Windy Point Soap last year. Michele showed me her this-close-to-being-a-body butter in a jar Aristoflex AVC lotion and asked how she could alter the viscosity to make it thinner. My versions were always so thin I could use a small bottle with a treatment pump. The difference? Mixing! Michele mixed by hand with a whisk while I used either a hand mixer or Minipro mixer.
