Experiments in the workshop: Adding Vita Burst Beads to our products – facial cleansers

We’ve spent the week having some fun with this gelled toner I taught at the first ever spa products class day at Windy Point Soap Making Supplies in Calgary, Alberta, back in November. On Monday, I shared with you a gelled toner we made for normal to oily skin types. On Tuesday, we took a look at…...

A moisturizing body wash for all skin types, especially dry

If you’ve been around this blog any length of time, you’ll know how much I love body washes. I design them to be cleansing but moisturizing as I usually don’t have much time in the shower to do an emulsified scrub thing or time after a shower to do a whole lotion thing. I try…...

Experiments in the workshop: Updating the 3-in-1 shampoo with lupine amino acids

Raymond really likes his 3-in-1 shampoo, conditioner, and body wash product that I originally made for him for his after swim shower, and I thought I’d make more for daily life without the swimming ingredients. I kept the ingredients relatively the same – I liked the surfactant mix I used and I liked the other…...

Experiments in the workshop: Extra hydrating body wash

This time of year is heck on my skin as I tend to wear capri pants and shorts all year ’round, even in wet and cold weather. (It’s too warm inside buildings and I’m only outside a very short period of time as I go from car to office and back!) As a result, I…...

Experiments in the workshop: Creating a body wash for really oily skin – part one

If you’ve read much of the blog, you’ll know that I have really oily skin and you’ll also know that I work with a lot of teenagers in my youth programs, so it only makes sense for me to make a body wash that might help oily skin be less oily. (You’ll also note I…...

Making a Japanese themed body wash – other ingredients

When making just about anything with surfactants, you want to think about adding other things like moisturizers, humectants, skin conditioners, and so on because when they’re alone, surfactants can feel a bit drying, no matter how gentle or mild they may be. If you have no idea what’s going on, please check out part one…...

Making a Japanese themed body wash – surfactants

Why did I choose the surfactants I did for my Japanese themed body wash? Always ask yourself about your goal and skin feel preferences to determine which ingredients you’ll use. I like to use at least two anionic (negatively charged) surfactants and one amphoteric (could be negative, could be positive) surfactant in my products because…...

Making a Japanese themed body wash…

My husband loves all things Japanese (hence the Genshiken youth group he runs for the “society for the study of modern visual culture” at the library where they watch anime and read manga and discuss both for hours!) and I thought I’d make him a Japanese themed body wash with ingredients that remind me of…...

Formulating for dry skin: What other things could we include in our body wash?

We’ve created our basic body wash recipe and we’re happy with it…but we could tweak it further! (We can ALWAYS do more tweaking, but it takes real skill to know when to stop!) So what kinds of things we could do to this recipe to make it more moisturizing and what ingredients will increase the…...

Essential oils: Eucalyptus in lotions and body wash

For some reason, menthol and eucalytpus go fantastically together, so I suggest trying a lovely foot lotion with 3% menthol, 1% eucalyptus, and 1% camphor, just remove 2% from the cocoa butter or soy bean oil to compensate for the essential oils that will go into the cool down phase. FOOT CREAM WITH MENTHOL AND EUCALYPTUSHEATED…...
